[C A G E D B I R D S]

What if I told you
They opened the doors?
To a cage that was sealed
For so many years
That we lost track of it?

A shiny key
That I could see
All day and night while we were trapped
Resting in the sun
That shone outside the cage

They opened the lock and yet
I refuse to leave this prison
Because it’s so loud and bright and scary
Why live when I could suffocate
Underneath the heavy blanket on a bird’s cage?

The scent of fresh air drifts into my cell
A light breeze
A night breeze
Wish I could get up and breathe it all in
But I’m afraid

If I were to leave the cage
Wouldn’t they capture me and put me back
Threaten me with the key
Taunt me with the golden bars
That are invisible to everyone else

Some joyful day
I’ll step outside
Feel the warmth and freedom
Until the snow sticks
And I hear the distant noise of a key clinking
